Principal Member of Technical Staff — Emulation (Leadership Role)
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Principal Member of Technical Staff — Emulation (Leadership Role)
Role Summary
Lead SoC emulation strategy and execution for next-generation AMD SoC programs. Deliver and maintain high-performance emulation platforms that enable early firmware, OS, driver, and application development and reduce silicon risk.
Experience Level
Senior — requires extensive senior-level experience; the posting specifies 15+ years in SoC design, verification, emulation, or HW/SW co-development.
Responsibilities
Accountable for technical leadership, hands-on execution, and cross-functional coordination to deliver emulation readiness aligned with silicon schedules.
- Define and own SoC emulation strategy, scope, milestones, and success criteria for major SoC programs.
- Lead bring-up of full-chip and subsystem emulation on enterprise platforms (e.g., Palladium, Veloce, Zebu).
- Integrate RTL, memory models, testbenches, transactors, and software interfaces to enable pre-silicon software development.
- Debug complex cross-layer issues spanning RTL, firmware, and software; drive root-cause and mitigation plans.
- Optimize emulation performance, capacity planning, and resource utilization.
- Influence SoC architecture and RTL decisions to improve emulation efficiency and debuggability.
- Define automation, CI/regression flows, and reuse across emulation environments; evaluate new tools and technologies.
- Provide technical status, risk assessments, and mitigation to program leadership; mentor engineers to raise team capability.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience to perform the role; preferred items are listed separately.
- 15+ years of experience in SoC design, verification, emulation, or HW/SW co-development.
- Deep hands-on experience with SoC-level emulation platforms (Palladium, Veloce, Zebu, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of complex SoC architectures (CPU, GPU, interconnects, memory subsystems, I/O).
- Expertise in SystemVerilog/Verilog and scripting languages (Python, Perl, Tcl, Bash, etc.).
- Proven ability to debug and resolve complex RTL and HW/SW interaction issues across layers.
- Demonstrated technical leadership on large, multi-team programs and single-point ownership for emulation deliverables.
Nice-to-have / preferred:
- Experience enabling Linux/UEFI/BIOS/RTOS bring-up on pre-silicon platforms.
- Knowledge of PCIe, DDR, AMBA/CHI, cache coherency, virtualization, and power management.
- Experience with co-emulation, acceleration, or hybrid verification environments.
- Background in high-performance computing, graphics, AI, or server-class SoCs.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline is stated as preferred (BS or MS). The posting does not specify acceptance language for equivalent experience.
