Job Title

Principal Engineer, SOC Performance Architecture

Role Summary

Lead the definition and delivery of end-to-end power and performance architecture for modular, scalable datacenter SoC products. Drive architectural specifications, predictive modeling, and trade-off analysis to meet product targets across performance, power, frequency, and area.

Work closely with architects, IP and design teams, verification and validation, and software to define requirements, validate designs, and influence cross-functional roadmaps. Role is eligible for Intel's hybrid work model; primary site Hillsboro, OR with additional teams in Santa Clara, CA and Austin, TX.

Experience Level

Senior - Principal-level role. Expect extensive senior experience (typically 10+ years) in performance/microarchitecture, modeling, simulation, and driving architecture execution for server/datacenter products.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include defining architecture requirements, modeling performance and power, and guiding cross-functional execution:

  • Define and drive SoC architecture power and performance specifications and product feature viability using SOC/IP modeling.
  • Analyze feasibility and trade-offs across performance, power, frequency, area, and features.
  • Develop and specify architectural and microarchitecture modeling for multiple workloads and use cases.
  • Create tests, test plans, simulation infrastructure, and analyze results using statistical models and data-driven prediction.
  • Provide experimental proof-of-concept solutions and propose design alternatives meeting constraints.
  • Develop and document new methodologies to extend predictive modeling and address emerging use cases.
  • Collaborate with architects, design, verification, and validation teams to execute project requirements.
  • Resolve modeling and implementation issues during feature development and improve product designs.
  • Mentor technical leaders and influence cross-functional roadmaps and technology targets.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed when applicable.

  • Extensive experience in performance architecture and microarchitecture with focus on server/datacenter workloads.
  • Proven expertise in SOC performance and power modeling, bottleneck analysis, and optimization techniques.
  • Strong experience with testing, simulation tools, advanced statistical modeling, and data-driven prediction.
  • Proven track record delivering experimental proof-of-concept solutions and driving end-to-end architectural designs to completion.
  • Experience creating tests, test plans, and simulation infrastructure; ability to analyze results and iterate on design.
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs across performance, power, area, frequency, and features and recommend practical solutions.
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience influencing cross-functional technical strategy and roadmaps.
  • Demonstrated mentoring and leadership experience; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be willing to undergo an extended background investigation as this is a Position of Trust.
  • Nice-to-have: prior experience defining industry-facing technology targets and aligning technical vision with market demands.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (with ~12+ years relevant experience); or Master's (with ~10+ years); or PhD (with ~8+ years). Related technical fields and equivalent experience are acceptable.
