Principal Engineer - Physical Design
Role Summary
As a Principal Engineer in the Physical Design team within Marvell Data Centre Engineering (Compute & Storage), you will lead architecture and delivery of RTL-to-GDSII implementation flows and drive physical design methodology for high-performance ASIC subsystems.
You will collaborate with SOC, CAD, DFT and verification teams to harden complex subsystems, mentor engineers, evaluate EDA tools, and represent the team in technical roadmap discussions.
Experience Level
Senior — typically requires 10–15 years of relevant industry experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect and implement physical design methodologies and automation flows.
- Lead RTL-to-GDSII implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, place & route, clock tree synthesis, and timing closure.
- Perform hands-on hardening of complex subsystems and deliver reference floorplans and timing-closed partitions to SOC teams.
- Collaborate with DFT and SOC teams for DFT insertion and SOC-level timing closure.
- Advise across projects to resolve complex implementation challenges and guide design decisions.
- Mentor and coach senior and junior engineers and promote best practices.
- Evaluate and drive adoption of emerging EDA tools with CAD and external vendors.
- Represent the physical design team in technical discussions and roadmap planning.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Proven experience with standard RTL-to-GDS flows and methodologies.
- Experience with large, complex design synthesis, floorplanning, place & route, clock tree synthesis, and timing closure for subsystems (PCIe, memory, Ethernet, etc.).
- Experience with memory generation.
- Experience with leading foundries and advanced process nodes (2nm, 3nm, 5nm).
- Strong scripting skills (Perl, Tcl, Python) and solid object-oriented programming ability.
- In-depth understanding of digital logic, computer architecture, and Verilog/VHDL.
- Good communication skills and ability to work independently in a team environment.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
