Principal Engineer, Physical Design
Marvell TechnologyJob Title
Principal Engineer, Physical Design
Role Summary
Lead physical design and methodology development for high-performance processor and ASIC designs in leading-edge CMOS processes. Work with local and global RTL, verification and CAD teams to deliver scalable implementation flows for server, 5G/6G, automotive, and networking products.
Applicants may need eligibility to access export-controlled technology; employment may require export license review for non-U.S. citizens and non-permanent residents.
Experience Level
Senior-level. The role requires 10+ years of progressive experience in back-end physical design and verification, including leadership responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include hands-on implementation leadership, methodology architecture, and cross-team technical guidance.
- Architect and lead development of next-generation physical design methodologies and automated flows.
- Provide technical leadership for RTL-to-GDSII implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, place & route, clock tree synthesis, and timing closure.
- Advise multiple projects and resolve complex implementation and timing challenges.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (RTL, verification, CAD) to optimize designs and execution.
- Mentor and coach senior and junior engineers to promote best practices.
- Evaluate and drive adoption of EDA tools and technologies with CAD and external vendors.
- Represent the physical design team in technical roadmap and methodology discussions.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- 10+ years of progressive back-end physical design and verification experience with leadership exposure.
- Deep practical knowledge of RTL-to-GDSII flows, including synthesis, place & route, CTS, and timing closure.
- Strong expertise in static timing analysis and power/signal integrity tools (examples: PrimeTime, Tempus, Voltus, RedHawk).
- Proficient in scripting and automation (Python, Perl, Tcl, Makefile) for flow development.
- Experience developing and deploying physical design methodologies and production flows.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills; proven mentoring ability.
- Experience working with EDA vendors and evaluating new tools is a plus.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field (as specified in the original posting).
