Principal Engineer - Hardware Sustaining
Role Summary
Lead hardware failure analysis and corrective actions for HPE Networking products within the Hardware Sustaining organization (NPAT). Diagnose complex hardware faults, coordinate fixes across engineering, manufacturing and supply chain teams, and mentor junior engineers to improve product hardware quality and customer experience.
Experience Level
Senior β requires 12+ years of experience (10+ years with a Masters degree).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Lead failure analysis of complex hardware issues across CPU, networking ASICs, power, clocking, high-speed signals, optics and related subsystems.
- Drive corrective and preventive actions: containment/work-arounds, validation of final fixes, and identification of other susceptible systems.
- Provide technical leadership and mentor junior staff in hardware quality and reliability practices.
- Coordinate cross-functional remediation with Engineering, Manufacturing, ODMs and supply chain; engage subject-matter experts as needed.
- Document findings, produce RCCA reports, and communicate status to internal stakeholders and customer support teams.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- Proven experience debugging networking hardware and using hardware design processes and tools (schematic capture, layout, BoM, PLM).
- Experience with high-density, multi-layer PCBs (20+ layers) and high-speed signals (50G+); working knowledge of signal integrity and power integrity concepts and tools.
- Design and debug experience with high-speed interfaces (PCIe, SerDes, DDR) and low-speed interfaces (I2C, SPI).
- Experience with FPGA and CPLD design and debug; Verilog RTL.
- Proficiency in scripting for hardware design, test, and debug.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and local language; demonstrated leadership as a technical lead or subject-matter expert.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with optics, power, clocking subsystems and system-level CPU/ASIC debugging.
- Experience coordinating corrective actions with ODMs and component suppliers.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering (required per source). The posting also specifies experience expectations: 12+ years of experience, or 10+ years with a Masters degree.
