Principal Engineer - FPT Validation

Role Summary

Senior SSD Firmware Validation Engineer on the Firmware Test Engineering team responsible for validating enterprise/datacenter NVMe SSD firmware across front-end, back-end/media management, FTL and security areas.

Define and execute validation strategies, test plans and automated test scripts; find and drive resolution of firmware defects while collaborating with firmware development teams through the product lifecycle.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include designing and executing firmware validation activities and reporting results.

  • Define test plans and design test cases for enterprise/datacenter NVMe SSD firmware.
  • Develop and maintain test scripts; integrate tests into automated test environments.
  • Create and run grey-box and white-box tests targeting front-end, back-end/FTL and security firmware areas.
  • Validate fixes, reproduce defects and drive issues to closure with cross-functional teams.
  • Debug NVMe/PCIe protocol issues and analyze traces using industry analyzers.
  • Document and track test results, sightings and validation status; communicate risks and progress to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with firmware development, test execution and platform teams to ensure system-level correctness.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; listed concisely.

  • 10+ years of SSD firmware validation experience (specific years noted in posting).
  • Strong knowledge of NVMe and PCIe specifications and system storage interactions (CPU, memory, drivers, OS, firmware).
  • Proven experience in creating test plans covering access patterns, NVMe protocols, firmware test hooks and vendor-specific commands.
  • Experience integrating tests into automated environments and collaborating with test execution teams.
  • Proficient with Linux system debugging and scripting/coding in Python.
  • Experience debugging protocol issues with hardware protocol analyzers (LeCroy/JDSU or similar).
  • Strong analytical, verbal and written communication, project management and cross-team collaboration skills.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with white-box and grey-box test methodologies for enterprise/datacenter SSD firmware.
  • Experience using AI-assisted tools to improve efficiency in testing or analysis.

Education Requirements
