Job Title

Principal Engineer, Device Engineering - Silicon Photonics Compact Modeling (New College Grad, 2027)

Role Summary

Join Device Engineering as a Silicon Photonics Compact Modeling Engineer focused on developing, validating, documenting, and supporting production-quality compact models for silicon photonic devices used in Process Design Kits. Work cross-functionally with technology development, characterization, design enablement, and EDA partners to enable accurate simulation and customer design success.

Experience Level

Entry-level (New college graduate). Role targets recent graduates completing a Master’s or PhD in 2027.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include compact-model development, validation against measured data, PDK integration, and support for model releases and customer use.

  • Develop and maintain compact models for silicon photonic devices; perform parameter extraction and model calibration using DC, RF/S-parameters, optical, and transient measurement data.
  • Build testbenches, regression methodologies, and validation reports to ensure model accuracy, stability, runtime efficiency, and usability.
  • Contribute to Process Design Kit development, documentation, verification, and release activities.
  • Support integration of models into customer design flows and EDA platforms; help resolve model, simulation, and usage issues with internal teams and EDA partners.
  • Collaborate with device engineering, characterization, process integration, and design enablement teams to understand device behavior and modeling requirements.
  • Develop automation and scripting solutions to improve parameter extraction, validation, reporting, and modeling workflow efficiency.
  • Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and follow Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.

Requirements

Degree and GPA requirements are summarized under Education Requirements. Below are other required and preferred qualifications.

  • Must-have: English fluency (written and verbal).
  • Nice-to-have: Prior internship or co-op experience in related fields.
  • Nice-to-have: Coursework, research, or project experience in semiconductor or photonic device physics, compact-model development, parameter extraction, device characterization, numerical modeling, or validation with measured data.
  • Nice-to-have: Programming or modeling experience with Python, MATLAB, Verilog-A, C/C++.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with photonic, RF, or mixed-signal EDA environments (Cadence, Synopsys, ADS, Luceda, or equivalent).
  • Nice-to-have: Demonstrated leadership, project management, strong written/verbal communication, planning, and organizational skills; interest in leveraging AI tools to improve workflows.

Education Requirements

Graduating with a Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Optics, or a related field from an accredited program. Minimum overall GPA 3.0. English proficiency (written and verbal) required.
