Principal Engineer, Controller Quality

Role Summary

Senior technical leader responsible for the quality strategy, qualification, and continuous improvement of controller (ASIC/SoC) suppliers supporting Micron's SSD, embedded, and storage portfolios. Drives supplier qualification from design through production and field support, collaborating across ASIC development, product engineering, manufacturing, dependability, and supply-chain teams, as well as external foundries, OSATs, and test labs.

Role can be based in San Jose (USA), Hyderabad (India), or Taiwan and requires extensive cross-time-zone collaboration with global partners.

Experience Level

Senior - requires extensive experience; minimum listed: 12+ years in semiconductor quality, supplier quality, product engineering, reliability engineering, or related areas.

Responsibilities

Accountable for controller supplier quality across qualification, production, and field operations. Key duties include:

• Lead end-to-end quality strategy for ASIC/SoC suppliers supporting storage and memory products, from qualification through end-of-life.
• Plan and execute supplier and controller qualification programs, including risk assessments and DFMEA/PFMEA reviews.
• Lead root-cause investigations (8D), CAPA activities, and corrective actions for controller-related quality and reliability issues.
• Establish and improve supplier quality metrics (DPPM, yield, reliability, RMA, field returns) and monitor performance.
• Partner with Engineering, Product, Test, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to assess and mitigate quality and reliability risks, and manage SCN/PCN evaluations.
• Conduct supplier audits and technical assessments across design, fabrication, assembly, and test operations.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to quality engineers and represent Global Supplier Quality in executive reviews.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience (education and certifications are listed separately under Education Requirements):

• 12+ years of hands-on experience driving semiconductor supplier quality, reliability, or product/supplier engineering programs.
• Demonstrated expertise in semiconductor reliability methodologies and failure analysis.
• Proficiency with statistical quality tools and methods such as SPC, DOE, and Weibull analysis.
• Proven experience leading supplier qualification programs, production release approvals, and cross-functional qualification activities (HTOL, ELFR, ESD processes).
• Experience with DFMEA/PFMEA, 8D problem solving, CAPA, and root-cause analysis.
• Track record working with foundries, OSATs, third-party reliability labs, and controller IC vendors.
• Ability to run supplier audits and technical assessments, and to influence global suppliers and internal teams without direct authority.
• Strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills; experience representing quality in executive reviews.
• Nice-to-have: direct experience with SSD, NAND Flash, DRAM, or storage controller qualification and data-driven decision making using AI.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Semiconductor Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field required (minimum). The posting lists 12+ years of relevant experience. Preferred certifications: Six Sigma Black Belt or equivalent quality certification. Familiarity with quality management standards such as IATF 16949, ISO 9001, AEC-Q100, and JEDEC is desirable.
