Principal Engineer, ASIC Physical Design
Micron TechnologyJob Title
Principal Engineer, ASIC Physical Design
Role Summary
Work on processors, controller architectures, or ASICs for the Enterprise SSD Group, focusing on physical implementation, timing, power, verification, and tape-out activities. Lead technical efforts to meet performance, power, and area (PPA) targets across block and full-chip designs.
Experience Level
Senior - requires at least 15 years of hands-on physical design and APR experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver physical design and closure for ASICs and subsystems; lead engineers to achieve subsystem and full-chip signoff.
- Perform block-level low-power floorplanning, placement, clock-tree synthesis, routing, and RC extraction.
- Perform static timing analysis (STA) and achieve timing closure at block and full-chip levels.
- Conduct power-integrity (IR/EM) analysis and resolve IR/EM issues across block and full-chip.
- Drive physical verification closure (DRC/LVS/ERC) and coordinate tape-out activities.
- Develop and maintain APR flows and perform PPA analysis.
- Mentor and lead a technical team to deliver subsystem partition closures.
- Leverage AI-assisted tools to accelerate physical-design closure activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, tools experience, and professional competencies. Education items are summarized below in Education Requirements.
- Minimum 15 years of hands-on physical design implementation, IR/EM experience, APR flow development, and PPA analysis.
- Proven STA closure experience at both block and full-chip levels.
- Experience with advanced process nodes (5nm/3nm preferred).
- Experience with Ansys Redhawk-SC for power/IR analysis.
- Experience with Cadence place-and-route and timing tools (e.g., Innovus, Tempus).
- Hands-on physical verification experience using tools such as Calibre for DRC/LVS/Antenna checks.
- Strong fundamentals in digital electronics and microprocessor architectures; strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead teams, take ownership, manage time effectively, and collaborate cross-functionally; proficient English communication.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with additional Cadence PnR toolsets and formal verification practices.
- Strong verbal communication and prior leadership of large ASIC delivery teams.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in electronics, computer architecture, electrical/computer engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience.
