Principal Embedded Software Engineer

Role Summary

Lead design and implementation of core embedded software for Ethernovia's networking devices, focusing on firmware, device drivers, test utilities and integration with host systems. Work with a cross-functional engineering team to deliver reliable, high-performance software for safety-critical automotive and edge applications.

Senior β€” minimum 10+ years of relevant embedded software development experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include architecture, implementation, testing and integration of low-level networking software and supporting tools.

  • Lead architecture, design, implementation and integration of embedded firmware, kernel/user-mode device drivers, stack extensions, debug and test utilities.
  • Develop firmware that configures, controls and monitors communication devices and exposes hardware features via device drivers.
  • Design and implement device drivers enabling middleware, OS and user applications to use hardware features.
  • Create and maintain automated unit and system tests to ensure software robustness and reliability.
  • Develop firmware for safety-critical automotive use, following functional safety practices and quality standards.
  • Participate in code reviews, debugging, performance tuning and defect resolution across hardware/software boundaries.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, practical experience and professional qualities required for the role.

  • Minimum 10+ years of embedded software development experience focused on firmware and low-level software.
  • Proficient in C/C++; Python experience is a plus.
  • Strong experience developing firmware for communication devices (preferably Ethernet) and embedded systems.
  • Experience writing and integrating kernel/user-mode device drivers and low-level code.
  • Proven experience with integration, automated unit/system testing and validation of firmware.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded processors and hardware interaction; able to debug across HW/SW boundaries.
  • Expertise in efficient coding for constrained footprint and high performance; strong understanding of SDLC including architecture, implementation and testing.
  • Excellent communication, documentation skills and attention to detail; able to work independently and in teams.

Nice-to-have:

  • Simulation/emulation platforms; GNU toolchains and debugging suites.
  • Experience with I2C, SPI, Ethernet, USB, SerDes, PCIe, NTB, SR-IOV and related protocols.
  • Familiarity with automotive safety qualification/processes (MISRA, ASPICE, ISO 26262).
  • Video processing protocols, mixed-signal systems, DSP experience.
  • Version control and review tools (Git/Perforce); ARM or similar embedded processors; bootloaders (u-boot).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering or a related technical field.
