Job Title
Principal CPU Architect - High-Performance and Physical Design
Role Summary
Senior CPU architect responsible for aligning microarchitecture, RTL, power-performance optimization, and physical design for high-frequency, server-class processors. The role spans architecture, RTL implementation, circuit and standard-cell tradeoffs, physical design, process technology, and advanced packaging.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Requires 15 or more years of relevant experience designing high-performance, high-frequency server CPUs.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include technical leadership across architecture, RTL, and implementation to meet frequency, power, and timing targets.
- Bridge the gap between CPU architecture, RTL implementation, and physical design.
- Serve as subject-matter expert on power delivery (regulators), power gating, di/dt, and thermal throttling.
- Analyze power and performance trade-offs for die stacking and advanced packaging proposals.
- Propose and drive improvements in high-frequency design and power methodology for custom CPU cores.
- Translate microarchitectural and RTL choices into frequency, timing, power, thermal, area, and implementation constraints.
- Collaborate with RTL, circuit design, physical design, process technology, and packaging teams to deliver implementable solutions.
Requirements
Must-have technical experience and skills.
- 15+ years of relevant experience in CPU architecture and high-frequency server CPU design.
- Extensive background in CPU microarchitecture and implementation for server-class processors.
- Strong understanding of power dissipation, power delivery, and efficiency concepts.
- Detailed knowledge of process technologies and circuit-level design considerations.
- Familiarity with trade-offs related to advanced packaging techniques.
- Experience with power management methods spanning software, architecture, RTL, VLSI, and process.
Nice-to-have:
- PhD or research experience in a relevant field.
- Advanced knowledge of physical design methodologies.
- Experience with GPU and SoC design.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. PhD is preferred.
