Platform Hardware Design Engineer
Intel CorporationJob Title
Platform Hardware Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver board-level platform hardware for validation and product development platforms. Lead electrical design from architecture and schematic capture through PCB implementation, bring-up, validation, and debug.
Work within cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet electrical, mechanical, thermal, manufacturability, and cost objectives.
Experience Level
Senior - requires at least 7+ years of relevant platform hardware or board-design experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include delivering high-speed platform hardware and driving design quality and validation.
- Independently design complex platform hardware: schematic capture, component selection, board-level architecture, and subsystem integration.
- Translate platform requirements into electrical specifications, schematics, placement constraints, routing requirements, and implementation guidelines.
- Develop and review high-speed interface implementations (DDR, PCIe, USB, Ethernet, CXL, SerDes).
- Define PCB stack-up, impedance control, return-path optimization, power delivery, and routing constraints.
- Review and approve schematics, component selections, and board-level implementations for compliance with electrical requirements.
- Perform PCB layout and routing reviews to improve signal integrity, power integrity, manufacturability, and overall design quality.
- Perform system-level electrical analysis including SI, PI, timing analysis, and design margin assessments.
- Lead board bring-up, electrical validation, root cause analysis, and debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and other lab equipment.
- Collaborate with PCB layout, package, firmware, validation, and manufacturing teams to resolve issues and ensure successful implementations.
- Mentor junior engineers and lead technical design reviews; contribute to process and methodology improvements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience. Preferred items listed separately.
- 7+ years experience in platform hardware design, board design, or electrical engineering.
- Proficient in schematic capture and complex PCB design.
- Strong knowledge of digital, analog, and mixed-signal circuit design.
- Experience developing and reviewing high-speed board-level implementations and interfaces.
- Working knowledge of Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) principles and analysis.
- Experience with board bring-up, validation, and hardware debugging.
- Experience using lab equipment: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, etc.
- Strong verbal and written English communication; ability to lead technical discussions and mentor engineers.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with PCB tools (Cadence Allegro, OrCAD, Mentor Graphics) and SI/PI tools (Cadence Sigrity, ANSYS HFSS, SIwave, SPICE).
- Familiarity with PCIe Gen4/Gen5/Gen6, DDR4/DDR5, USB4, Ethernet, high-speed SerDes.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC, DFM/DFT, reliability methodologies, and familiarity with FPGA/CPLD/ASIC platform architectures.
- Experience with Python or automation scripting for design workflows.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field (degrees explicitly listed in the posting).
