Physical Mixed Layout Engineering Intern (16-month)
Role Summary
Work with the physical design team to implement and optimize mixed-signal integrated circuit layouts. The intern will assist with floorplanning, placement, routing, and layout verification, collaborating with senior engineers and cross-functional teams across the chip design flow.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for current undergraduate students. This role is intended for early-career candidates and student interns; expected to be in-study during the internship period.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include supporting layout activities for mixed-signal ICs and participating in design reviews.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to create and optimize physical mixed-signal layouts.
- Assist with floorplanning, placement, and routing of analog and digital blocks.
- Use industry-standard EDA tools for layout design and verification.
- Participate in design reviews and provide input on layout-related decisions.
- Work with cross-functional teams to meet performance, power, and area targets.
- Troubleshoot and resolve layout-related issues during implementation.

Key technical skills and qualifications for successful candidates.
- Must-have: Basic understanding of semiconductor fundamentals and integrated circuit design principles; strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with layout/EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso or Synopsys IC Compiler.
- Nice-to-have: Experience or familiarity with scripting (Python, TCL) to support layout automation and flows.
- Preferred: PCB and FPGA experience; coursework or exposure to CMOS design.
- Note: This role may require an export license for candidates from certain countries; candidates from those countries may face start delays or be ineligible until a license is granted.
Education Requirements
In study toward a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Science, Computer Science, or a related field. Candidates must be available for a 16-month internship (May/June 2027 through August/September 2028) with an expected graduation date of November 2028 or later. At least 1+ years of academic experience with programming languages such as C, C++, or Python is expected.
