Physical Design Specialist (PDS)
Role Summary
Provide technical leadership in physical implementation for ASIC/SoC designs. Work with internal teams and customers to develop, validate, and optimize physical design flows to meet timing, power, and area goals.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Candidates typically have around 3+ years of relevant physical-design experience.
Responsibilities
Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing and optimizing physical design flows and supporting projects through signoff.
- Implement and validate floorplanning, placement, clocking, routing, and signoff flows.
- Perform timing closure, congestion analysis, and power/area optimizations.
- Develop and maintain scripts and automation for flows (Tcl/Python/Perl).
- Debug and resolve physical design issues across the RTL-to-GDS flow.
- Collaborate with logic, timing, and verification teams to meet project targets.
- Document flows, best practices, and contribute to internal tooling improvements.
Requirements
Essential and desirable skills and experience for the role.
- Must-have: Practical experience in ASIC/SoC physical design (placement, routing, timing closure, signoff).
- Must-have: Scripting proficiency (Tcl, Python, or Perl) to automate flows and debug issues.
- Must-have: Strong understanding of timing analysis, clocks, constraints, and PPA trade-offs.
- Must-have: Experience with EDA place-and-route and static timing analysis tools.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with Synopsys physical implementation tools (Fusion Compiler / IC Compiler II) and signoff flows.
- Nice-to-have: Prior customer-facing or applications/support experience and knowledge of low-power or DFT techniques.
