Physical Design Engineer, Senior
QualcommJob Title
Physical Design Engineer, Senior
Role Summary
Senior ASIC physical design engineer in the ASICS Engineering team responsible for physical implementation, optimization, verification, and documentation of IP blocks and SoCs. Collaborates with hardware and software architects to meet system-level requirements, performance, power, and quality targets.
Experience Level
Senior. Typical candidates have 3+ years of relevant ASIC/physical-design experience; hires may include those with shorter but relevant hands-on experience and demonstrated impact.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Define, model and implement physical design for IP blocks and SoCs using RTL-to-GDS and custom design flows.
- Create architectures, circuit specifications, logic designs, and system-level simulations from requirements.
- Optimize timing, power, and area; drive synthesis, place-and-route, and sign-off flows.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop implementation strategies and resolve integration issues.
- Develop and execute verification and validation plans for physical design and integration.
- Produce detailed technical documentation for EDA/IP/ASIC projects.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Hands-on ASIC physical design, verification, validation, or integration experience.
- Experience with architecture and design tools and with design verification methods.
- Familiarity with RTL-to-GDS flows and common EDA tools (for example Cadence and Virtuoso) and physical implementation flows.
- Proficiency with scripting and programming for automation and flow development.
- Ability to work independently, communicate clearly, and influence cross-functional decisions.
Nice-to-have:
- Prior experience on low-power, high-performance SoC or IP development.
- Experience with advanced physical implementation optimizations and sign-off methodologies.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or related field (commonly cited with ~2+ years ASIC experience), OR Master's degree in Science, Engineering, or related field (commonly cited with ~1+ year ASIC experience), OR PhD in Science or Engineering. Preferred fields: Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
