Physical Design Engineer II
MicrosoftJob Title
Physical Design Engineer II
Role Summary
Join Microsoft SCHIE's semiconductor design team to implement and integrate physical designs for blocks, subsystems, and SoCs used in cloud infrastructure hardware. The role focuses on delivering high-quality physical design signoff, automation of flows, and technical evaluations that support cloud-scale hardware deployments.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The posting indicates approximately 6+ years of relevant industry experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver physical design implementation and integration across block-to-chip scope and support production-quality tapeouts.
- Perform floorplanning, synthesis, placement, clock-tree synthesis (CTS) including custom clocking, routing, and signoff-quality static timing analysis.
- Execute physical verification and formal equivalency checks to achieve tapeout signoff.
- Perform power integrity analyses (IR-drop) and electromigration (EM) assessments; implement power-efficiency measures.
- Develop and automate physical-design flows and scripts to improve productivity and repeatability.
- Evaluate and recommend technology choices, IP, and vendor options for projects.
- Provide clear progress, risk, and issue reporting to program management; coordinate with cross-functional teams.
- Occasional travel (<25%) as required.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and constraints for successful candidates.
- 6+ years of industry experience in physical design implementation and signoff at block, subsystem, sub-chip, or SoC level.
- Proven experience with tapeouts of complex ASICs in leading-edge process nodes.
- Hands-on experience with physical-design tool flows and methodologies used for placement, CTS, routing, STA, and physical verification.
- Experience developing automation/scripts to support physical-design flows.
- Ability to work with limited direction and communicate concise technical status and risks.
- Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements (Microsoft Cloud Background Check) and pass periodic rechecks.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
