Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and implement custom IP and SoC physical layouts from RTL to GDS for manufacturing-readiness. Work on synthesis, place-and-route, timing closure, power/noise analysis, and sign-off flows using industry EDA tools.
Experience Level
Entry-level. Typical experience expectation: 0–1+ years in physical design depending on degree (see Education Requirements).
Responsibilities
Deliver physical implementation and verification tasks to produce manufacturable silicon designs.
- Implement physical design flows for custom IP and SoC designs (RTL-to-GDS).
- Perform synthesis, floorplanning, place-and-route, clock tree synthesis, and static timing analysis.
- Conduct power and noise analysis, power/clock distribution planning, and reliability verification.
- Verify and sign off designs with equivalence checking, layout verification, electrical rule checks, timing sign-off, and dynamic power integrity checks.
- Identify and resolve design violations and contribute to architecture and methodology improvements.
- Optimize designs for power, performance, and area using EDA tools and automation techniques.
- Contribute to development and refinement of physical design methodologies and automation.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for initial consideration.
- Hands-on experience with physical design tools and flows: logic synthesis, place-and-route, static timing analysis, and design closure.
- Experience with RTL design and timing closure processes to analyze and optimize device performance.
- Scripting experience in an interpreted language (TCL preferred).
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities; demonstrated ability to debug and resolve complex design issues.
- Familiarity with power/noise analysis and power/clock distribution strategies.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with automation and methodology development for physical design flows.
- Prior work on SoC-level integration and sign-off for advanced process nodes.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related specialized field with 1+ years of physical design experience, OR a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related specialized field with 0 years of experience; equivalent practical experience is accepted per business needs.
