Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Implement physical design for custom IP and SoC projects from RTL through GDS, including implementation, verification, signoff, and optimization to meet power, performance and area targets.

Work within the physical design team in Penang to deliver tape-outs, improve design methodology, and automate flows.

Experience Level

Mid-level — minimum 3+ years of relevant physical-design experience.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

• Perform physical implementation from RTL to GDS for IP and SoC designs.
• Execute synthesis, floorplanning, placement, routing, clock-tree synthesis, and timing closure.
• Run static timing analysis, power and noise analysis, and reliability verification.
• Perform verification and signoff activities including formal equivalence, STA, layout verification, ERC/DRC, and structural checks.
• Analyze signoff results, identify violations, and recommend fixes to meet product requirements.
• Optimize designs for power, frequency, and area; contribute to methodology and flow automation improvements.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred qualifications:

• Must-have: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in physical design.
• Multiple tape-out experience in deep-submicron process nodes.
• Hands-on expertise with the full physical design flow and industry-standard EDA tools.
• Experience with signoff flows such as STA, LEC, ERC and DRC.
• Proficiency with scripting (Perl, TCL, Python) and familiarity with HDLs (VHDL, Verilog).
• Demonstrated analytical/problem-solving skills, ability to multitask, and experience working in diverse teams.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with physical design across multiple clock domains, power management, and low-power methodologies (UPF).

Education Requirements

Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related technical field. A master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
