Physical Design Engineer
BroadcomJob Title
Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design engineer focused on physical layout and implementation for ASICs with emphasis on parallel interfaces, advanced packaging, and 2.5D/3D interconnects. The role partners with R&D, IP development, signal- and power-integrity engineers, customers, and manufacturing to deliver production and development products.
Experience Level
Senior β typically requires 10+ years of relevant physical design/layout experience (posting specifies 10β12+ years depending on degree).
Responsibilities
Key day-to-day responsibilities include design implementation, verification, and development of interconnect technologies and packaging roadmaps.
- Implement physical layout including power grids and die-die interconnects for 2.5D and 3D designs.
- Perform DRC, LVS, and electrical checks; coordinate with verification teams.
- Develop and automate common flows and design steps to improve productivity.
- Collaborate with SI and PI engineers on high-speed signal interconnect design and optimization.
- Analyze and optimize ubump and RDL patterns for electrical performance.
- Evaluate and develop new 2.5D/3D interconnect technologies and contribute to technology/testchip roadmaps.
- Work with customers and cross-functional teams under tight timelines, providing technical guidance with incomplete information when necessary.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; listings of preferred items are noted where applicable.
- Extensive experience with IC, package, and PCB layout databases and industry tools.
- Strong scripting skills (TCL and Python) for automation of routine tasks and flows.
- Proven ability to automate processes and design steps to scale repeatable work.
- Experience in electrical analysis and optimization related to interconnects (ubumps, RDL patterns).
- Experience collaborating with SI/PI teams on high-speed interface design and signal/power integrity tradeoffs.
- Ability to manage multiple customers and projects across a global organization and deliver on short timelines.
- Excellent problem-solving and independent working skills; comfortable making design decisions with incomplete data.
- Nice-to-have: hands-on experience with 2.5D/3D packaging, advanced interconnect development, and testchip/program roadmapping.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science with 12+ years related work experience, or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science with 10+ years related work experience (as specified in the posting).
