Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and develop complex integrated circuits for ASIC/SoC products. Responsible for architecture definition, logic design, system simulation, and physical implementation through synthesis, place-and-route, timing and power analysis.
Work is independent and collaborative; provides technical leadership on assigned features and coordinates with team members and external vendors.
Experience Level
Mid-level (journey-level). Typically a candidate with several years of hands-on physical design/ASIC experience who can work independently on complex tasks.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Define architecture and logic for ASIC blocks and perform system-level simulation.
- Specify module interfaces and formats for simulation and integration.
- Implement physical design flows: synthesis, place-and-route, timing closure, and power optimization.
- Analyze and evaluate the entire process flow from high-level design to final implementation.
- Contribute to layout and multidimensional design trade-offs for complex ICs.
- Conduct experimental tests, analyze equipment/measurement data, and evaluate results.
- Coordinate with vendors and third parties to assess support and capabilities.
- Mentor or assist junior staff and plan activities with other team members.
- Provide regular project status updates to management and stakeholders.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience (concise):
- Proven experience in ASIC/physical design and delivering silicon-proven blocks.
- In-depth knowledge of synthesis, place-and-route flows, timing closure, and power analysis.
- Strong background in logic design and system-level simulation.
- Ability to analyze and optimize the RTL-to-GDSII flow and troubleshoot complex problems.
- Experience coordinating with external vendors and third parties.
- Good judgment, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently with general guidance for new assignments.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills; able to provide status updates to management.
- Several years of related ASIC/physical design experience (see Education Requirements for degree-based experience guidance).
Education Requirements
Degrees and experience equivalency stated in the posting: Bachelor's degree with 5+ years related experience; Master’s degree with 3+ years related experience; or PhD with no experience required. (Fields of study not specified.)
