Job Title

Photonics Design Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Camera Semiconductor Devices organization to develop advanced photonic devices for future camera and sensing products. The role leads computational physics and machine-learning-driven simulation workflows to take optical components from concept through prototype and production.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Preferred 5+ years of relevant industry experience in electromagnetics modeling, inverse design, and machine learning-driven device design.

Responsibilities

Work across simulation, data, and hardware teams to develop and qualify photonic devices for high-volume products.

  • Own end-to-end development of computational physics and simulation platforms, including first-principle algorithms and ML-assisted design workflows.
  • Develop deep-learning surrogate models and inverse-design methods to optimize device performance under manufacturing tolerances.
  • Design and model advanced photonic devices to meet system-level camera and sensing requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to explore system solutions and tradeoffs.
  • Partner with external vendors to coordinate prototype development and feed experimental/manufacturing data back into the ML pipeline.
  • Communicate data-driven engineering risks and architectural tradeoffs to support strategic decision-making.

Requirements

Must-have technical experience and capabilities.

  • Experience in semiconductor and photonic device design, development, and data analysis.
  • Experience with electromagnetics modeling, inverse design techniques, and/or machine learning applied to device design.
  • Proven ability to implement simulation workflows and integrate experimental data into modeling pipelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally with system and manufacturing teams.

Nice-to-have:

  • 5+ years of industry experience with deep expertise in electromagnetics modeling, inverse design, and ML.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor device physics and high-volume manufacturing considerations.
  • Demonstrated independent initiative, strong communication, and teamwork skills.

Education Requirements

Minimum: B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Sciences, or a related field. Preferred: M.S. or Ph.D. in the same fields. Degrees in related or equivalent fields are acceptable.
