Job Title

PhD Research Intern, Networking (2027)

Role Summary

Join NVIDIA Research (NVResearch) as a PhD research intern working on future high-performance networking and computing systems. You will contribute to long-horizon research that can influence NVIDIA's technology direction 5–10 years out and produce prototypes, publications, and patents.

Experience Level

Internship - PhD-level research internship (intended for current PhD students).

Responsibilities

Work on research and prototyping in networking, systems, and hardware/software co-design to advance high-performance compute and communication.

  • Develop algorithms and design hardware and software to extend state of the art in computing and networking.
  • Invent and prototype new techniques, methodologies, processes, and devices; produce prototypes, patents, and publications.
  • Conduct long-horizon research that informs technology direction rather than short-term product work.
  • Potential project areas: optimizing communication stacks for AI training/inference, network protocols and congestion control, software/hardware co-design for AI systems, circuits/microarchitecture for network controllers and switches, optical switching and silicon photonics network architectures.

Requirements

Key skills and experience expected for successful candidates.

Must have:

  • Relevant research experience in hardware, software, or networking (industry or university).
  • Background in networking architectures, topologies, routing, and system design.
  • Track record of or clear trajectory toward publications at top-tier conferences (ISCA, HPCA, NSDI, SIGCOMM, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience simulating networks and high-performance computing systems.
  • Familiarity with AI model training and inference systems and their communication patterns.
  • Strong programming skills for rapid prototyping (Python); experience with C++ and parallel programming.

Nice to have:

  • Experience building or using AI agents to automate experiments, analyze results, or generate/review code.

Education Requirements

Pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or an equivalent doctoral program ("or equivalent program" as stated in source).
