PhD Research Intern, AI Accelerator Design and VLSI
Role Summary
Research intern at NVIDIA Research working on AI hardware/software co-design, accelerator architecture, and VLSI/IC design methodology. The role combines theoretical and practical work to advance accelerator design, automation of VLSI flows, and prototype testchip development.
Intern hourly rate: 38β94 USD; interns are eligible for NVIDIA intern benefits.
Experience Level
Entry-level - PhD student (PhD research intern).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design and evaluate AI accelerators and microarchitectures.
- Research novel digital VLSI circuits and ASIC/VLSI design techniques.
- Apply machine learning, agentic AI, and automation to ASIC/VLSI tool flows.
- Develop numerical methods for quantization, sparsity, or tensor decomposition grounded in computer arithmetic.
- Collaborate on prototype testchips and tapeout-related activities.
- Work with AI researchers and hardware teams and publish/present original research.
Requirements
Key qualifications and skills required or preferred:
- Publication record in ML, architecture, VLSI, or circuits conferences (strongly preferred).
- Proficient in Python and PyTorch; experience with SystemVerilog or C++ for hardware design.
- Experience with modern EDA tool flows and VLSI implementation; tapeout experience is a plus.
- Familiarity with High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience presenting technical work.
- Self-motivated, creative, and able to work effectively in a research team.
Education Requirements
Pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (PhD-level students targeted).
