Job Title
Optical Systems Principal Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Connectivity Optical Systems group to develop and validate optical communication systems for coherent and IMDD DSPs. The role focuses on electro‑optical component modeling, DSP simulation and offline processing, hardware evaluation platforms, and automated post‑silicon verification and lab testing.
Experience Level
Senior-level; typically 10+ years of relevant industry experience (the posting specifies 10–15 years with a Bachelor’s degree or 5–10 years with an advanced degree).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include system verification, modeling, testing, and customer support.
- Design and execute system verification tests for coherent and IMDD DSPs with optical engines.
- Develop DSP simulation models of electro‑optical components and correlate models with measurements.
- Build and operate optical evaluation platforms using electro‑optical components and DSP test chips.
- Perform offline DSP processing for performance validation and post‑silicon verification in automated test environments, including long‑haul fiber scenarios.
- Debug chip and system issues using experiment‑based methods and lab instrumentation.
- Provide technical guidance to customers on tuning optical platforms for optimal DSP performance.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- 5+ years working with coherent optical or IMDD communication products.
- Knowledge of optical fiber impairments (chromatic dispersion, PMD, PDL) and signal‑processing algorithms for carrier recovery and related DSP functions.
- Experience with verification testing and instrument automation.
- Proficiency in a scripting language such as Python.
- Hands‑on laboratory experience with optical components and test equipment.
Nice-to-have:
- AI-assisted data analysis for test performance and issue resolution.
- Experience with SERDES and client-side protocols (Ethernet, ITU).
- Embedded firmware development and debugging; C or C++ programming.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field plus 10–15 years of relevant professional experience; or a Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with 5–10 years of experience. Equivalent practical experience may be considered.
