Optical Systems Engineer
LumilensJob Title
Optical Systems Engineer
Role Summary
Design, model, and optimize high-speed optical transceivers and end-to-end links for data center and AI applications. Collaborate with IC, packaging, and reliability teams to translate system requirements into manufacturable, scalable transceiver architectures.
Work includes component selection, system-level tolerance analysis, signal integrity and DSP techniques, simulation, and correlation with experimental data to meet bandwidth, efficiency, and reliability goals.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Specific years of experience not stated; expects demonstrated experience in high-speed optical transceiver design and measurements.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include system design, modeling, verification, and experimental validation.
- Lead design of optical transceiver products from concept through implementation.
- Define specifications and develop end-to-end optical system models (DSP, drivers, TIAs, lasers, modulators, photodetectors).
- Perform signal integrity analysis and implement/simulate equalization techniques (FFE, DFE, MLSD, pre-emphasis).
- Define verification and testing requirements for transceivers and components.
- Analyze impact of impairments (noise, crosstalk, non-linearity, reflections) on system performance.
- Conduct numerical and analytical simulations under realistic operating conditions.
- Correlate simulation models with experimental data at module and component levels.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and hands-on experience.
- Experience with transceiver design and high-speed optical communication systems and components.
- Familiarity with direct-detection and coherent optical communication architectures.
- Experience modeling optoelectronic components using tools such as VPIphotonics, MATLAB, or Python.
- Familiarity with advanced DSP techniques (linear and decision-feedback equalization).
- Knowledge of modeling common impairments in high-speed optical links.
- Hands-on experience with high-speed optical component measurements (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.).
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
- Willingness to travel approximately 20% of the time.
Education Requirements
MS or Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related technical field.
