Optical Engineer, Advanced Photonic IC Development
Marvell TechnologyJob Title
Optical Engineer, Advanced Photonic IC Development
Role Summary
The Optical Engineer will design, verify and validate advanced silicon photonics and integrated optical components for Marvell's data center and AI product lines. The role covers device development, heterogeneous integration, system-level testing, and transfer to production within a cross-functional hardware and firmware team.
Work includes component-level design, process development, characterization, and collaboration with digital/analog, substrate, signal/power integrity and system teams.
Experience Level
Senior-level; typical candidates have either a Master’s or PhD with 5+ years' relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s with 10+ years' relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop optical devices (detectors, modulators) and high-speed integrated optical components.
- Perform optical and RF electrical modeling, simulation, and photonic IC layout.
- Characterize devices (DC and RF), validate hardware, firmware and control loops, and conduct system-level testing.
- Drive process development, productization, and transfer of designs to manufacturing.
- Collaborate closely with digital and analog circuit designers, signal/power integrity, substrate/layout and system teams.
- Analyze large datasets, build statistical models, and present technical results to stakeholders.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- Strong understanding of semiconductor physics and proven practical device design experience for photonic components, especially high-speed linear integrated components.
- Hands-on experience with optical and RF modeling and simulation tools and photonic EDA tools for layout.
- Practical experience in optical device characterization including DC, RF and device control.
- Familiarity with electro‑optic materials and integration into silicon photonics platforms.
- Knowledge of Si/CMOS/MEMS process technologies for fabrication and integration of electrical and optical devices.
- Proactive self-starter, effective team player, and ability to work in an integrated global team.
- Ability to work with large volumes of data and use statistical analysis tools to develop models and communicate findings.
- May require eligibility to access export-controlled technology and participation in export license review processes.
Education Requirements
Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics or a related technical field (typically with 5+ years’ relevant experience), or a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Photonics or a related technical field with 10+ years’ related professional experience; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
