Optical Design Engineer
LumilensJob Title
Optical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and verify high-speed optical coupling optics for silicon photonics transceivers, targeting signal rates up to 1.6 Tb/s. Collaborate with suppliers, mechanical and process engineers to produce manufacturable, high-performance optical solutions.
Work within Lumilens' photonics engineering team focused on chip-to-chip optical interconnects and scalable photonic engines for AI supercomputing.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Minimum 2 years of direct optical systems design experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include optical simulation, design, testing, and cross-functional support for coupling solutions.
- Perform ray-tracing simulations and optical design using Zemax, CodeV, or equivalent (sequential/non-sequential, tolerancing, Monte Carlo, ZOS-API).
- Design lens- and fiber-based coupling solutions for silicon photonics electro-optical components.
- Design and execute experiments and test setups to evaluate optical coupling performance.
- Provide technical guidance to suppliers to optimize optical transceiver performance.
- Support mechanical designers and process engineers to ensure manufacturability and performance under realistic conditions.
- Document results and communicate findings to cross-functional and international teams.
- Travel as required (approximately 20% of the time).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, tools, and attributes:
- Proven expertise with ray-tracing tools (Zemax or CodeV), including tolerancing and scripting.
- Proficiency in MATLAB or Python for analysis and automation.
- Hands-on laboratory experience with optical testing and setup design.
- Experience collaborating with international teams across time zones; strong written and verbal communication.
- Process and quality awareness; familiarity with optical communications standards (IEEE, MSA) is a plus.
- Familiarity with JMP is a plus.
- Self-motivated, organized, able to multitask, and apply creative problem-solving.
Education Requirements
Master's degree (MS) in Optical Engineering, Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related technical field is required; Ph.D. is preferred. The posting also notes prior exposure to photonics, telecom, or high-speed networking systems as a plus.
