New College Grad - Embedded Firmware Engineer
Role Summary
Develop embedded firmware and higher-level interface software for custom in-house semiconductor equipment in the Systems Integration Group (SIG). Work across software, electrical, control, and mechanical teams to design, debug, and optimize software that directly controls electronic systems.
This is a hands-on role involving hardware bring-up, lab testing, and close collaboration with manufacturing and operations teams.
Experience Level
Entry-level (New college graduate). Suitable for candidates with minimal industry experience, typically 0–2 years.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include development, debugging, and support of embedded equipment software.
- Develop embedded software from bare metal to embedded Linux and higher-level interfaces.
- Write and maintain code in C, C++, Bash, and Python; use GNU toolchain and containers.
- Debug software–hardware interactions using schematics, datasheets, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, and SMUs.
- Participate in PCB/board bring-up and review board layouts for software-relevant concerns (power, clocks, interfaces).
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and production teams during manufacturing and operations.
- Work hands-on in the lab to build, test, and iterate physical systems (software + hardware).
- Collaborate with distributed teams in Boise, San Jose, Penang, and Hyderabad.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Proficiency in C and C++.
- Ability to read and reason about schematics, datasheets, and timing diagrams to debug software–hardware interactions.
- Experience with Linux and the GNU toolchain.
- Experience debugging embedded systems at the signal and register level.
- Familiarity with common hardware interfaces: GPIO, SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe.
- General lab equipment knowledge (oscilloscopes, DMMs) and comfort with hands-on hardware work.
Nice-to-have / preferred:
- Python proficiency, container experience, and bare-metal development experience.
- Board bring-up experience and ability to correlate firmware behavior with electrical measurements.
- Experience debugging timing, signal integrity, or power-related issues affecting firmware.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve design, testing, and debugging.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent; or equivalent practical experience.
