Microcontrollers System Engineering Intern - Summer 2027
Role Summary
Summer internship on the Microcontrollers System Engineering team in Austin, TX. The intern will be mentored by senior engineers to build a project demonstrating NXP microprocessor capabilities in AI/ML, focused on time-series and anomaly detection.
Work includes firmware and proof-of-concept development, cross-functional collaboration with designers and software developers, and delivering a final demonstration and presentation to leadership.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Internship) — targeted to currently enrolled undergraduate students returning to school after the internship; typical internship experience level, no fixed years of professional experience required.
Responsibilities
Own a summer project from conception through delivery and presentation. Typical responsibilities include:
- Manage project planning, execution, and final presentation to leadership.
- Develop firmware, proofs of concept, demos and drivers for NXP microcontrollers.
- Implement AI/ML use cases focusing on time-series and anomaly detection.
- Perform technical feasibility studies for key functions and features.
- Build reference designs and produce application notes, white papers, and developer guides.
- Review reference manuals and data sheets to improve developer ease-of-use.
- Collaborate with cross-functional team members, including designers, software developers, and lab technicians.
Requirements
Core qualifications and desired skills.
- Must-have: Proficiency in C.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with embedded Systems-on-Chip (especially ARM Cortex).
- Nice-to-have: Embedded software development and debug experience (operating systems, device drivers, connectivity stacks such as 802.15.4, BLE, Thread, Zigbee).
- Nice-to-have: Technical writing experience producing application notes, white papers, or user guides.
- Soft skills: Ability to work under mentorship, communicate results, and collaborate across locations.
Education Requirements
Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science and be enrolled and returning to school after the internship term. Candidates who will graduate prior to July 2027 are not eligible for this summer internship.
