Role Summary

Lead a software engineering team responsible for VPU (video processing unit) firmware, drivers and multimedia frameworks. Drive architecture, development and optimization of video codec software and integration with Linux kernel drivers and userspace libraries.

Collaborate with research, hardware design, platform software and open-source communities to deliver scalable media solutions. Salary range: £97,300  - £131,700 per year.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team developing VPU firmware, drivers and media frameworks.
  • Architect, develop and optimise video codec software for encode and decode paths.
  • Integrate VPU support into Linux kernel drivers and userspace libraries.
  • Work with multimedia stacks such as V4L2, FFmpeg and GStreamer to enable platform support.
  • Coordinate across research, hardware, platform software teams and open-source projects to manage dependencies and ensure robustness.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred technical qualifications:

  • Must-have: Proven experience leading engineering teams in video or media software.
  • Must-have: Strong knowledge of video compression standards (H.264, HEVC, AV1, VP9).
  • Must-have: Experience with Linux multimedia frameworks (V4L2, GStreamer, FFmpeg) and driver/userspace integration.
  • Must-have: Strong cross-team communication and collaboration skills.
  • Nice-to-have: Hardware-software co-design experience and performance tuning for multimedia systems.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with camera/ISP pipelines, rendering/display systems, and engagement in standards or open-source governance.
