Job Title

Mechanical Engineer Supporting ASIC Test

Role Summary

Design and deliver thermal management and robust socketing solutions for test and validation PCBs supporting Broadcom ASIC products for hyperscale data center applications. Work closely with electrical PCB designers, package engineers, vendors, and test teams to ensure mechanical reliability and thermal performance of high-power, high ball-count devices.

Experience Level

Senior-level; typically requires 8+ years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include designing, validating, and supporting mechanical test hardware and thermal solutions.

  • Collaborate with PCB electrical designers to define socket and thermal requirements.
  • Perform mechanical component design and verification using SolidWorks.
  • Extract 3D mechanical data from Allegro PCB designs and use package warpage data for socket design.
  • Measure device warpage with precision profilometry to validate simulations.
  • Design and review cooling solutions (air, liquid, cold plate) for test hardware.
  • Manage socket hardware vendors: review designs, provide feedback, and approve hardware.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical contact issues in lab and test-floor environments.
  • Evaluate and procure mechanical and test hardware such as thermal control units and resistance measurement platforms.
  • Rapid prototyping (including 3D printing) to resolve mechanical and usability issues.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.

  • Proven experience designing semiconductor socket and cooling solutions for large, high-power, high ball-count ASICs.
  • Advanced SolidWorks proficiency for part and assembly design.
  • Experience with thermal simulation tools (Ansys Icepak and/or SolidWorks FLOW) and mechanical simulation (Ansys).
  • Experience managing vendors through test-hardware manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with pogo-pin and elastomeric IC socket solutions and related mechanical debugging.
  • Strong mechanical prototyping and hands-on tooling skills (micrometers, calipers, basic hand tools).
  • Familiarity with ATE test-hardware mechanical configurations and lab/test-floor troubleshooting.
  • Ability to manipulate large datasets in Excel or via scripts (Python).
  • Attention to detail, ownership mindset, strong teamwork and vendor-management skills.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 6+ years of relevant experience. (Degree in Mechanical Engineering specified in source.)
