Materials Development Engineer
Role Summary
Lead the development, integration, and certification of materials for assembly and packaging technologies to enable high-volume manufacturing readiness. Work across multi-functional teams and with external suppliers to define materials strategies, validate new materials, and support platform programs.
Position reports into packaging/packaging technology teams and collaborates with MTD, ME, global materials, core competency, quality, reliability, and technology integration partners.
Experience Level
Senior level. Requires a minimum of 5 years of materials development experience; 8+ years in the semiconductor industry is preferred.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include planning and executing material technology programs, supplier assessments, and cross-functional integration to support packaging development and HVM readiness.
- Lead development, integration, and certification of packaging materials (polymers, metals, solders, composites).
- Plan and execute evaluations of new materials and supplier technologies; generate recommendations and certifications for platform programs.
- Perform materials characterization, failure analysis, and apply structure–property–processing understanding to resolve materials/process/equipment issues.
- Collaborate with MTD, ME, global materials, core competency, quality & reliability, and technology integration teams.
- Work directly with external materials suppliers and manufacturing/assembly sites; conduct supplier audits and on-site assessments as needed.
- Prepare and present materials strategies, development plans, and technical findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage projects and lead or coordinate small technical teams; influence cross-functional decisions and supplier directions.
- Travel to supplier and assembly sites as required.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, experience, and professional capabilities.
- Strong understanding of materials fundamentals: physical/mechanical properties, characterization techniques, thermodynamics/kinetics, and phase transformations.
- Experience with materials characterization tools, mechanical behavior assessment, and materials modeling.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve materials–process–equipment integration issues.
- Demonstrated project and team management skills; strong communication, presentation, negotiation, and influencing abilities.
- Familiarity with supplier management and supplier qualification processes.
- Ability to work across multiple teams and sites; comfortable with required travel.
- Nice-to-have: knowledge of statistical methods and Design of Experiments (DoE).
Education Requirements
