Manufacturing Test Development Engineer Co-op

Role Summary

Six-month on-site co-op at Axcelis Technologies in Beverly, MA, focused on designing, building, validating, and supporting electrical and mechanical manufacturing test equipment and fixtures for semiconductor production. The role provides hands-on experience with automated test equipment, hardware-level debugging, and cross-functional engineering collaboration.

Co-op cycle: July 6 to December 18. A $1,000 travel stipend is provided to support commuting students.

Experience Level

Entry-level (Co-op/Internship). Intended for undergraduate students currently enrolled in a relevant engineering program; prior professional experience is not required.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities for this co-op assignment include:

  • Design, develop, build, validate, and maintain electrical and mechanical manufacturing test solutions, including automated test equipment and custom test fixtures.
  • Use manual, subtractive, and additive manufacturing techniques for fixture fabrication.
  • Perform hardware-level debugging of test systems, instrumentation, and interfaces.
  • Analyze test data to identify failure modes, root causes, and process variations.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, design, process, and quality engineering teams to meet fixture and test requirements.
  • Create and maintain test documentation, procedures, and reports.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase test coverage, throughput, and repeatability.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, availability, and practical abilities for the co-op:

  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with schematic/PCB tools such as Altium, KiCad, or QElectroTech.
  • Experience or familiarity with fabrication tools and techniques (calipers, hand tools, 3D printing, fixture fabrication).
  • Familiarity with measurement equipment: digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and data acquisition systems (DAQ).
  • Experience with project planning tools (Gantt charts, Microsoft Project/Planner) is helpful.
  • Available for the specified co-op cycle (July 6 – December 18) and able to work onsite Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.

Education Requirements

Applicants must be candidates for a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related engineering program; currently enrolled undergraduate status is required.
