Manufacturing Test Development Co-op

Role Summary

Six-month on-site engineering co-op at Axcelis' Beverly, MA facility to design, develop, validate, and support electrical and mechanical manufacturing test equipment and fixtures. The role involves hands-on hardware debugging, test automation, and collaboration with manufacturing, design, process, and quality teams.

Co-op cycle: Jan 1 to July 2. Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM. Axcelis provides a $1,000 travel stipend for commuting students; local transit options include the Salem Skipper (Salem Skipper).

Experience Level

Entry-level co-op / internship targeted at current undergraduate students; this is a 6-month assignment (no specific years of professional experience required).

Responsibilities

The co-op will support test development and manufacturing readiness through hands-on engineering work and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Design, build, validate, and maintain electrical and mechanical test solutions, including automated test equipment and custom test fixtures
  • Use manual, subtractive, and additive manufacturing techniques to meet fixture requirements
  • Perform hardware-level debugging of test systems, instrumentation, and interfaces
  • Analyze test data to identify failure modes, root causes, and process variations
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, design, process, and quality engineering teams to meet fixture and test requirements
  • Create and maintain detailed test documentation, procedures, and reports
  • Support continuous-improvement initiatives to increase test coverage, throughput, and repeatability
  • Work on assigned projects under mentorship and communicate progress to stakeholders

Requirements

Required technical skills and tool familiarity for the role.

  • Familiarity with CAD/modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with schematic and PCB design tools such as Altium, KiCad, or QElectroTech
  • Experience with fabrication and workshop tools (3D printing, calipers, hand tools)
  • Familiarity with measurement equipment: DMMs, oscilloscopes, and data-acquisition systems (DAQ)
  • Experience with hardware-level debugging and instrumentation
  • Familiarity with project-management tools (Gantt charts, Microsoft Project/Planner)
  • Ability to produce clear test documentation and reports

Education Requirements

Applicants must be candidates for a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a similar undergraduate engineering program.
