Machine Learning Hardware Architect - Silicon
Role Summary
Lead design and delivery of custom machine learning hardware accelerators for AR/VR SoCs within Reality Labs. Work with ML hardware architects, digital designers, firmware and software engineers to optimize architectures for power, performance, and bandwidth and drive concepts from prototype to high-volume product.
Experience Level
Senior — requires approximately 12+ years of experience in hardware design, silicon architecture, or equivalent production silicon roles.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical leadership, architecture and product delivery, cross-disciplinary integration, and performance optimization.
- Serve as technical lead for ML hardware engineers from architecture through productization.
- Drive designs to exceed targets for compute, bandwidth, and power consumption.
- Define microarchitecture and RTL and guide implementation into SoCs.
- Partition solutions across hardware and software; evaluate trade-offs (speed, performance, power, area).
- Coordinate cross-disciplinary teams and manage multiple initiatives to move concepts into prototypes and products.
- Lead subsystem and SoC integration efforts.
- Travel domestically and internationally as required.
Requirements
Must-have experience and skills.
- 12+ years as a hardware design engineer or silicon architect with production silicon shipped in volume.
- Experience in machine learning IP silicon development and ML accelerator design.
- Practical expertise in digital microarchitecture and RTL coding.
- Experience evaluating and making trade-offs across hardware and software implementations.
- Results-oriented, proactive with demonstrated creative and critical thinking.
Nice-to-have:
- Knowledge of physical design and low-power implementation techniques.
- Experience with firmware, DSP coding and optimization.
- Experience with SoC architecture and subsystem integration.
- Familiarity with deep learning algorithms and techniques (e.g., CNNs, transformers, LLMs).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred: Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related areas.
