Linux/OSS and Security Software Engineer - Industrial High-end Processors

Role Summary

Develop Linux and open-source software for Renesas RZ MPUs, focusing on device drivers, security features (secure boot, cryptography), porting and maintaining kernel and firmware components, and working with internal LSI teams and external OSS communities.

Deliver production-quality software for industrial and edge AI products, manage vulnerabilities and maintenance, and improve build/process automation.

Experience Level

Mid-level - typically requires around 5+ years of embedded software development experience.

Responsibilities

The role covers design, development, porting, maintenance, and collaboration for Linux and security-related software on Renesas products.

• Design and implement device drivers for new hardware.
• Design and develop security functions using dedicated hardware (secure boot, cryptography).
• Develop and maintain Linux-related software: Linux kernel, Trusted Firmware-A, U-Boot, OP-TEE.
• Manage inner-source artifacts and contribute patches to OSS communities.
• Evaluate and integrate OSS for industrial network functions (e.g., OPC UA).
• Set up and maintain Yocto Project build environments and recipes.
• Package proprietary libraries for Ubuntu and Debian.
• Track CVEs, define patching policies, and perform remediation.
• Plan software maintenance, improve processes, and automate QA/CI workflows.
• Conduct technical research and prototyping for next-generation products.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders and OSS communities for technical coordination and support.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred qualifications.

• Must have: Embedded software development experience (around 5+ years), able to implement and debug from hardware specifications.
• Basic knowledge of open-source licenses (GPL, MIT, BSD).
• Strong communication skills with customers and stakeholders.
• Business-level Japanese; conversational English and willingness to work in English.
• Preferred: Experience in Linux kernel, device drivers, graphics, video codecs, security, or industrial network features.
• Experience with Yocto Project and maintaining recipes.
• Knowledge of Arm (Cortex-A/M/R, TrustZone) or RISC-V architectures; assembly programming experience is a plus.
• Experience debugging on development boards (ICE) and contributing to OSS communities.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (GitLab, Jenkins) and security topics (secure boot, crypto, SELinux, CVE response).
• Knowledge of virtualization/hypervisor technologies.
