Linux Kernel Scheduler / Performance Lead

Role Summary

Lead development of Linux kernel scheduler performance and scalability features for AMD EPYC CPUs within the Linux Server Operating Systems team. Design, implement, and upstream kernel and related open-source changes, and coordinate across hardware, firmware, and software stacks.

Experience Level

Senior — 15+ years of Linux kernel development experience preferred; proven leadership and upstream maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design and implement scheduler and performance/scalability improvements in the Linux kernel targeting AMD EPYC CPUs.
  • Drive features through the upstream Linux kernel community and coordinate with partner technical teams.
  • Review code, create unit tests, and write detailed technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, power-aware application teams, and cross-stack engineering groups to ensure correctness and performance.
  • Lead and coordinate global engineering efforts and contribute as a kernel maintainer.
  • Mentor and guide other engineers on kernel performance and scalability topics.

Requirements

Key skills and qualifications.

  • Must-have: Extensive experience in Linux kernel development with emphasis on scheduler/performance and upstream contribution or maintenance experience.
  • Must-have: Strong C programming skills and experience with low-level systems programming.
  • Must-have: Deep understanding of operating systems concepts, data structures, concurrency, and performance analysis.
  • Must-have: Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work with global teams and partner communities.
  • Nice-to-have: x86-64 assembly experience and familiarity with processor architecture internals.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with BIOS/UEFI/firmware, KVM/QEMU and virtualization extensions, and familiarity with the GNU toolchain and git.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
