Job Title

Lead System Software Engineer, Platform — Server Embedded Firmware

Role Summary

Design and implement microcontroller firmware and embedded manageability software for NVIDIA GPU server platforms. Work on ARM M‑class microcontrollers and RTOS-based firmware to enable BMC, GPU, I/O, sensor, and peripheral management, collaborating with hardware, security, and platform teams.

Experience Level

Senior — typically 12+ years of experience in low-level microcontroller firmware development and server manageability.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include firmware development, integration, and validation for server management subsystems.

  • Design and implement microcontroller firmware for ARM M‑class devices and other embedded controllers.
  • Develop C/C++ manageability features in RTOS-optimized environments (Zephyr, FreeRTOS).
  • Perform firmware bring-up, debugging, performance analysis, and hands-on lab validation.
  • Implement register-based communication and DMTF-standard messaging (MCTP, PLDM, Redfish, SPDM) between BMC, GPUs, switches, memory, I/O expanders, sensors, and local peripherals.
  • Design a portable microcontroller framework for multiple server management subsystems; write and review design and code.
  • Instrument code, automate unit tests, maintain test reports, and produce software quality reports based on static analysis and coverage.
  • Collaborate with security and hardware teams to align firmware with security and hardware architecture requirements.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience. Education items are summarized separately under Education Requirements.

  • 12+ years of low-level microcontroller firmware development on embedded controllers using Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
  • Experience developing BMC and/or microcontroller firmware for CPU, GPU, network, and storage management.
  • Experience with embedded interfaces such as USB and I3C; familiar with ARM IDEs, debuggers, logic/protocol analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Strong understanding of interrupts, multi-threading, DMA, memory management, and constrained embedded environments.
  • Proficient in embedded programming and scripting: C/C++, Bash, Python; familiarity with Go is a plus.
  • Ability to read and use hardware schematics, reference manuals, and datasheets for embedded development.
  • Practical experience with server manageability protocols: MCTP, PLDM, SPDM, SMBUS, and OCP recovery workflows.
  • Solid Linux fundamentals: distributions, packages, image building, and deployment.

Nice-to-have:

  • Hands-on experience implementing MCTP stacks in embedded environments or FPGA.
  • Contributions to or participation in Open Compute, OpenBMC, DMTF or similar industry groups.
  • Expertise in system software and platform security for x86/ARM rack or blade servers.

Education Requirements

Bachelor of Science or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
