Layout Design Intern
Role Summary
As a Layout Design Intern you will develop and prepare multi-dimensional IC layouts and detailed drawings from schematics, using CAD/EDA tools. You will work with analog and digital design teams to floorplan, implement, and verify analog integrated circuits and prepare data for fabrication hand-off.
The role supports goals for precision, speed, area, reliability, power and ESD, and includes collaboration with packaging/production engineers and participation in design reviews and automation of layout flows.
Experience Level
Entry-level (internship). Intended for current students or early-career candidates; typically 0β2 years of professional experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include end-to-end IC layout tasks, verification, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Create and manage integrated circuit (IC) layouts from floorplanning through sign-off.
- Implement analog layouts to meet area, reliability, power, ESD and performance targets.
- Prepare layout specifications, detailed drawings and documentation for fabrication hand-off and archive.
- Run and verify Design Rule Checks (DRC) and Electrical Rule Checks (ERC); support LVS and sign-off flows.
- Participate in layout design reviews and coordinate with analog/digital design and packaging engineers.
- Develop or improve layout flow automation and scripts to increase productivity and consistency.
- Apply manufacturing rules to produce robust, area-efficient layouts suitable for production.

Preferred technical skills: Working knowledge of electrical circuit fundamentals (resistance, capacitance, voltage, current); familiarity with Unix/Linux environments.

EDA/tools: Familiarity with Cadence Virtuoso, Assura LVS/DRC or similar mixed-signal tools (Mentor, Synopsys) and basic scripting ability (Perl, Python, C, Cadence SKILL).

Semiconductor knowledge: Familiarity with device physics, analog layout sensitivities, semiconductor processes (BJTs, FETs, diodes, passives), packaging and thermal considerations.

Layout techniques: Understanding of matching techniques, on-chip parasitics, routing impedances/electromigration, and crosstalk mitigation.
Education Requirements
