Laser Design Engineer
LumentumJob Title
Laser Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and develop InP-based semiconductor lasers (DFB and high-speed EML) for product development and volume production. Work within the laser engineering team to improve yield, reduce cost, and ensure production stability.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical experience guidance: Bachelor’s +6 years, Master’s +4 years; PhD candidates may be considered without prior industry experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver technical work across design, evaluation, and production support.
- Develop and optimize laser designs using semiconductor material physics, optical science, and high-speed design techniques.
- Support stable volume production and drive productivity improvements.
- Design products (DFB lasers, EMLs) focused on yield improvement and cost reduction.
- Design and fabricate evaluation hardware (for example, submounts) as needed.
- Evaluate fabricated chips, analyze test data, and prepare technical reports.
- Present and discuss results at internal meetings.
Requirements
Core technical and language skills required for the role.
- Must-have: Practical experience in semiconductor laser design and development (typically 1–2+ years of hands-on experience).
- Must-have: Knowledge of compound semiconductor systems, particularly InP material physics.
- Experience with product-level design for yield improvement and cost reduction of laser diodes.
- Understanding of semiconductor device reliability.
- Fluent Japanese and intermediate English communication skills.
- Basic PC skills (MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field (or equivalent). Experience guidance: Bachelor’s +6 years, Master’s +4 years; PhD may be considered without relevant industry experience.
