Laser Component Engineer
AppleJob Title
Laser Component Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Laser Engineering team within Camera Semiconductor Devices (CSD) to design, develop, test, and qualify laser components used in Face ID and LiDAR scanners. The role leads conversion of laser design concepts into products ready for high-volume manufacturing and works closely with internal product teams and external vendors.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Preferred 3+ years of relevant industry experience in device design, process integration, or production transfer.
Responsibilities
Lead technical and vendor-facing activities to deliver manufacturable laser components that meet product and system requirements.
- Define engineering requirement specifications (ERS) for laser components and establish correlations between component and system-level specs.
- Collaborate with internal R&D and product-definition teams on next-generation laser designs.
- Drive vendor partnerships to develop robust process integration flows and key process steps for laser devices.
- Lead engineering development efforts to improve device performance, yield, and manufacturability.
- Investigate and resolve reliability and performance issues observed at module or system level.
- Review vendor yield and performance data and authorize engineering sample shipments.
- Provide regular status updates to cross-functional teams on performance, yield, and mass-production readiness.
- Explore and pilot new laser device technologies aligned to the internal technology roadmap.
Requirements
Key technical skills and experience required or strongly preferred.
- Must-have: Practical experience in epitaxy (EPI) processes and related device fabrication.
- Must-have: Experience transferring projects from engineering development into high-volume production.
- Must-have: Experience working with external vendors on process integration and process development.
- Must-have: Demonstrated ability to analyze device yield and performance data and drive corrective actions.
- Nice-to-have: Industry experience with III-V optoelectronic devices (VCSEL, LEDs, edge-emitting lasers, PCSEL).
- Nice-to-have: Epitaxy growth background specific to III-V devices.
- Nice-to-have: Strong data-analysis skills (experience with JMP) and scripting for data inquiry.
- Nice-to-have: Strong communication skills and proven cross-functional collaboration.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering, or a similar discipline. Preferred: MS or PhD in physics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
