Junior Physical Design Engineer - MCU
Role Summary
Entry-level physical design engineer working on microcontroller (MCU) block or chip implementation. Responsible for participating in the physical implementation flow from floorplanning through signoff under senior guidance.
Experience Level
Entry-level / Junior. Suitable for candidates with internships, co-op experience, or up to a few years of relevant ASIC/physical design exposure.
Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities for this role include:
- Support floorplanning, placement, clock-tree synthesis, routing, and ECO implementation for MCU blocks or chips.
- Run timing closure activities and static timing analysis under supervision; assist with timing fixes.
- Perform layout verification checks such as DRC/LVS run coordination and fix iteration support.
- Assist with DFT insertion support, scan/ATP generation, and testability checks as required.
- Develop and maintain automation/scripting to support physical design tasks and tool flows.
- Work with RTL designers, verification, and backend teams to resolve physical implementation issues.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred skills (concise):
- Hands-on exposure to ASIC/SoC physical design tasks through internships, coursework, or early-career roles.
- Familiarity with physical implementation concepts: P&R, CTS, timing closure, ECOs, and verification checks.
- Scripting skills (Tcl, Python, or similar) and comfort with Linux-based tool flows.
- Ability to read and interpret timing reports, placement/routing data, and verification logs.
- Good teamwork and communication skills; ability to follow direction from senior engineers.
- Nice-to-have: experience with industry EDA tools (place-and-route, STA, LVS/DRC), DFT experience, or prior MCU/embedded work.
