Job Title

Intern - Yield Enhancement (YE) Physical Failure Analysis Engineer

Role Summary

As a PFA Engineer Intern on the Yield Enhancement team, you will support physical failure analysis investigations of defects in advanced memory devices. You will perform sample preparation, imaging, and analysis to help identify root causes and communicate findings to engineering partners. The position includes daily lab work and a focused 3-month project with a final presentation.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship. No prior industry experience required; previous internships or research in semiconductor or failure analysis are preferred.

Responsibilities

Primary duties during the 3-month full-time internship (day shift).

  • Perform PFA sample preparation and analysis (deprocessing/delayering, cross-sectioning, FIB, SEM/TEM imaging) following area skill guidelines.
  • Review electrical/failure analysis, fault isolation, and probe/yield data to select physical analysis targets.
  • Identify and categorize defect signatures and help characterize new or unknown defect types.
  • Analyze data to support root-cause determination and summarize findings in clear reports (images, defect location, likely root cause) for part owners and YE/Fab engineers.
  • Operate PFA lab equipment safely and assist with basic troubleshooting under guidance.
  • Own and deliver a focused short-term project that fits the 3-month timeline and present outcomes to the team and leadership.
  • Use approved AI and digital productivity tools to assist data analysis, image/report generation, knowledge retrieval, and documentation while following company data protection and IP policies.

Requirements

Must-have skills and preferred qualifications.

  • Basic understanding of semiconductor devices and fabrication processes (must).
  • Strong attention to detail and good analytical and problem-solving skills (must).
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to summarize technical results simply (must).
  • Hands-on lab experience is a plus (microscopy, SEM/FIB, sample preparation, cleanroom) (preferred).
  • Familiarity with data tools such as Excel, JMP, or Python (preferred).
  • Previous internships or research projects in semiconductor or failure analysis (preferred).

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Required completion of area-defined safety and equipment training certifications during the internship.
