Intern - Systems Performance Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Data Center Workload Engineering team to run customer-representative workloads on enterprise and GPU-accelerated systems, collect and analyze telemetry, and deliver performance insights. You will work on a defined performance analysis project with mentorship and present results to the engineering team.

Experience Level

Entry-level (Internship). Suitable for current university students seeking hands-on systems and performance engineering experience.

Responsibilities

Work on a defined performance analysis project and contribute to test automation, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

  • Execute performance validation and benchmarking on enterprise servers, GPU systems, and storage platforms.
  • Configure and run representative workloads (AI inference, databases, virtualization, object storage, etc.).
  • Collect, validate, and analyze system and device telemetry to produce reproducible performance results.
  • Develop or improve Python-based automation for test setup, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Investigate performance issues and present findings, contributing code and documentation to the team.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and attributes.

  • Experience working in Linux environments, including command-line tools, file systems, processes, and basic system administration.
  • Programming experience in Python, C, C++, or a comparable language.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to validate data and ensure repeatability.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for presenting technical results.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools to support software development and productivity.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with performance measurement, benchmarking, profiling, or systems analysis.
  • Familiarity with tools such as perf, fio, iostat, bpftrace, or language-level profilers.
  • Knowledge of storage concepts (block devices, NVMe, PCIe, file system internals).
  • Experience with Python data analysis and visualization libraries (pandas, matplotlib, etc.).
  • Exposure to AI workloads, GPU computing, databases, virtualization, distributed storage, and Git.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field; expected graduation after the internship ends. Coursework in operating systems, computer architecture, systems programming, or closely related subjects is expected.
