Intern - Memory Systems Architecture & AI
Role Summary
Join the DRAM Systems & Architecture Lab as a research intern to investigate next-generation memory systems for AI accelerators. Work spans tiered memory architectures, workload analysis, prototypes, and system-level evaluation across hardware and software.
Experience Level
Internship - entry-level research role. Typical candidates have 0β2 years of relevant research or practical experience.
Responsibilities
Conduct research and experiments to evaluate memory-system innovations for AI workloads.
- Research and evaluate tiered memory architectures for AI inference and large language model workloads.
- Design and implement experimental methodologies, models, simulations, and prototypes to analyze memory performance and data movement.
- Investigate data placement, cache management, migration mechanisms, and memory-hierarchy optimizations.
- Perform quantitative analysis using hardware platforms, simulators, and FPGA-based prototypes to assess architectural trade-offs.
- Document results, present technical findings, and collaborate with architecture and research teams.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and abilities for a research-focused intern.
- Strong understanding of computer architecture, memory hierarchy design, and system performance analysis.
- Systems programming experience in C++ and Python (or similar languages).
- Familiarity with performance modeling, simulation, profiling, and benchmarking techniques.
- Experience with experimental system evaluation using simulators or hardware platforms.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
- Experience using AI-enabled tools and large language models (e.g., Copilot, Claude) to support research or engineering workflows.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within a research team.
Nice-to-have:
- Research experience in memory systems, AI accelerators, GPUs, large-scale inference, or HPC architectures.
- Experience developing architectural simulators, analytical models, or workload characterization frameworks.
- Familiarity with AI inference workloads, KV cache management, Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) designs, or memory-centric AI systems.
- FPGA development, RTL design, High-Level Synthesis (HLS), or hardware prototyping experience.
- Peer-reviewed publications, patents, or conference presentations in computer architecture or systems research.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field. The posting also recognizes research experience obtained through PhD research, publications, internships, or academic projects as relevant preparation.
