IC Validation Engineer Intern, MS - Summer 2027
Role Summary
The intern will support validation of analog front-end designs, photonics integrated circuits (PICs), and board-level hardware for high-speed optical communication systems (800G, 1.6T ZR). Work includes test development, lab measurements at mmWave and beyond, and scripting test automation within the Optics/Validation team.
Team is part of Marvell's Data Center Engineering group (Westlake Village, CA). Candidates may be subject to export-control review as required by law.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for Master's students (internship). Intended for current MS students; see Education Requirements for enrollment and graduation timing.
Responsibilities
Assignments vary by project phase and intern skill set. Typical responsibilities include:
- Develop test hardware for chip- and sub-system-level performance evaluation (probe solutions, probe wedges/cards, PCBs).
- Execute engineering validation plans for optoelectronic components (TIAs, modulator drivers).
- Design test platforms and verify or troubleshoot board- and chip-level designs with senior guidance.
- Automate measurements and test sequences using Python scripting.
- Perform lab measurements using VNA, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and related equipment.
- Collaborate with validation team members on test development, test data structures, and test hardware integration.
- Document validation results and produce technical reports.
- Modeling, simulation, and low-noise / high-gain amplifier testing up to mmWave where required.
Requirements
Technical skills and experience expected for successful interns.
- Must-have: Hands-on lab experience with test & measurement equipment (VNA, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer) and willingness to perform bench work.
- Must-have: Scripting/programming ability in Python for test automation and data processing.
- Must-have: Basic skills in hardware verification and troubleshooting at board and chip level; ability to work under guidance of senior engineers.
- Nice-to-have: RF and microwave fundamentals (S-parameters, mmWave techniques) and experience with related devices (filters, splitters, TWAs).
- Nice-to-have: Transistor-level analog design exposure (op amps, amplifiers, comparators) and familiarity with laser drivers and TIAs.
- Nice-to-have: Knowledge of communication theory (modulation, SNR, DSP, equalization), silicon photonics, or digital system signaling.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with Matlab, ADS, C, or similar engineering tools.
- Nice-to-have: Experience designing probe cards, probe wedges, or custom PCB test fixtures.
Education Requirements
Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree (MS) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with expected graduation between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028. (Posting notes PhD interns may have additional compensation.)
