IC Packaging Design Intern
Role Summary
12–16 month student internship with Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group in the Ottawa Design Centre. The intern will support IC packaging and high-density circuit layout for high-speed optical networking products.
The role focuses on CAD-based layout and mechanical assembly support, collaborating with signal-integrity and packaging engineers to prepare layouts for 3D electromagnetic and thermo-mechanical analysis. Desired start date: May 2027.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Internship). Student-level role intended for candidates at the beginning of their career; suitable for current students or recent graduates seeking a 12–16 month placement.
Responsibilities
Typical tasks assigned to the intern include:
- Design IC chip carriers for electronic components and pluggable modules.
- Support circuit layout of mini-panels with high-density high-speed transmission lines and sensitive power domains using CAD tools.
- Contribute to physical assembly design and mechanical outline development.
- Generate layouts to accelerate 3D electromagnetic simulations and thermo-mechanical analysis.
- Work under mentorship from senior packaging and signal-integrity engineers; take on progressively complex tasks as skills develop.

Minimum and preferred qualifications for successful candidates.
- Must-have: Ability to learn quickly and work independently or as part of a team; interest in IC packaging and high-speed layout work.
- Must-have: Availability for a 12–16 month student internship starting around May 2027.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with advanced electronics manufacturing.
- Nice-to-have: Exposure to CAD and electrical/mechanical design tools (examples: Cadence Allegro, Keysight ADS, AutoCAD, DraftSight, SolidWorks).
- Nice-to-have: Basic understanding of frequency analysis and analog electronic circuit fundamentals.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with tolerance analysis.
