Job Title

Hardware Tools Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Hardware Tools team to develop and maintain the Bluespec compiler, hardware libraries, and supporting tools used by MatX architects, designers, and verification engineers. The role focuses on improving language, compiler, and tool flows that increase engineering productivity and reduce time-to-silicon risk.

Work closely with architecture, RTL design, and verification teams to deliver production-quality tools and integrations that are safe for current tapeouts while enabling the next-generation chip development.

Experience Level

Senior-level (individual contributor). The posting expects a senior mindset and ownership; no explicit years-of-experience requirement is stated.

Responsibilities

Deliver and maintain compiler features, libraries, and engineering tools that are used daily by hardware teams.

  • Collaborate with architects, designers, and verification engineers to identify workflow bottlenecks and prioritize tool work.
  • Evolve Bluespec language, type system, libraries, and compiler for speed, stability, and stronger error detection.
  • Expose compiler knowledge to simulation and formal flows (assertions, generated checks, and assumptions).
  • Build debugging, editor, and build tools; own testing and release processes to avoid breaking teams' builds.
  • Investigate and fix root causes in compiler, libraries, or shared flows to prevent recurring issues.
  • Contribute upstream to open-source projects where appropriate.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and working habits for immediate impact.

  • Strong Haskell: production Haskell experience; able to write, debug, and profile in a large codebase (Bluespec compiler is written in Haskell).
  • Strong Rust: production Rust for libraries, code generators, simulators, or reference models.
  • RTL literacy: able to read Bluespec, Verilog, or SystemVerilog to understand compiler output and verification behavior.
  • Engineering tools experience: built tools other engineers depend on; comfortable with Python, build systems (Bazel preferred), and CI.
  • Autonomy: able to take ambiguous requests, define the problem, and deliver shipped tools with minimal supervision.
  • Collaboration: works directly with multiple hardware teams and measures success by impact on their schedules.
  • Location: able to work with teams in Mountain View, CA (office) or remotely; occasional travel a few times per year.

Nice-to-have (not required): experience building or verifying compilers, contributions to bsc/GHC/rustc, experience with Bluespec/Chisel/Clash, hardware verification tools, interactive theorem provers, SAT/SMT integration, language servers or waveform tools, and familiarity with Yosys/Verilator/SymbiYosys.

Education Requirements

Not specified.
