Hardware System Diagnostic Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for defining, designing, and owning the end-to-end diagnostics test suite for accelerator boards and racks used in MatX's rack-scale AI data center product. Works with the Hardware System team and manufacturing partners to ensure high manufacturing yield and reliable customer deployments.
The role focuses on diagnostics across AI chip, PCIe, HBM, power, thermal, and rack-scale management, including tooling, CI/CD, and hands-on debug support.
Experience Level
Senior — typically 7+ years in systems diagnostics, hardware validation, or manufacturing test.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include development, deployment, and support of diagnostics for board and rack products.
- Own end-to-end diagnostics test suite for accelerator boards and racks.
- Develop diagnostic tools for AI chip, PCIe, HBM, power, and thermal subsystems.
- Define test coverage and pass/fail criteria for manufacturing screening.
- Enable JDM/ODM partners with documentation, tooling, and hands-on debug support.
- Support NPI and production ramp phases; triage manufacturing escapes and field failures.
- Build and maintain CI/CD infrastructure for the diagnostics software stack.
- Track and report quality metrics: yield, test coverage, defect density.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; followed by concise nice-to-have items.
- 7+ years in systems diagnostics, hardware validation, or manufacturing test.
- Expert in Python and C/C++ for test automation and low-level device programming.
- Deep knowledge of PCIe, memory hierarchies, power management, and I/O systems.
- Proven experience working with ODM/JDM or contract manufacturing partners.
- Experience building and scaling test automation frameworks and CI/CD for diagnostics.
- Proficient with Linux system tools for hardware interrogation and fault analysis.
- Self-directed and effective in a fast-moving startup environment; strong communicator across engineering, manufacturing, and executive audiences.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States and work from the Mountain View office Tuesdays–Thursdays.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with AI accelerators, GPUs, or custom ASIC diagnostics.
- Familiarity with HBM or advanced packaging (2.5D/3D) test considerations.
- Exposure to rack-scale management: BMC, PDU, IPMI, or Redfish.
- Experience writing diagnostics that run at bare-metal or pre-OS environments and with error-injection frameworks.
- Prior NPI experience at a semiconductor or early-stage hardware startup; familiarity with Linux drivers, PCIe enumeration, or register-level programming.
