Job Title

Hardware Design Engineer - Intern

Role Summary

The intern will join the System Example Design team to develop RTL IP and FPGA system designs that enable customers to use Altera FPGA devices. The role focuses on FPGA HW/SW co-development, system bring-up, debugging, and performance optimization for platforms such as SmartNICs, embedded GPU-interacting platforms, and ARM HPS-based solutions.

Experience Level

Entry-level (Internship). Candidates are expected to have some hands-on experience (typically measured in months) in digital logic hardware and software/scripting.

Responsibilities

Day-to-day responsibilities include RTL design, integration, system bring-up, and collaboration with software teams.

  • Design, develop, integrate, and validate RTL for FPGA-based systems and platforms.
  • Implement and integrate FPGA subsystems and I/O technologies (PCIe, EMIF, Ethernet) and on-board ARM Hard Processor Systems (HPS).
  • Support FPGA system architecture, performance optimization, and hardware debug activities.
  • Collaborate with software and application teams on HW/SW co-design and integration.
  • Support board bring-up, system-level validation, and debugging.
  • Develop software abstractions, drivers, and frameworks to enable FPGA acceleration solutions.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to optimize end-to-end system performance.

Requirements

Key must-have and preferred qualifications for successful candidates.

Must-have:

  • At least 3 months of hands-on experience in digital logic hardware design or verification (SystemVerilog, Verilog and/or VHDL).
  • At least 3 months of software programming or scripting experience (C/C++ and/or Python).
  • Strong communication, initiative, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in cross-functional/global teams.
  • Eligible for any required Canada export authorizations.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with FPGA development flows and tools such as Quartus.
  • Experience with hardware–software co-design, embedded systems projects, or working with protocols like PCIe, DDR4/5, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with ARM HPS-based solutions or board-level bring-up.

Education Requirements

Must be currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Engineering Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent field (or equivalent practical experience).
